In 2008 I started keeping a list of books that I have read. I wish I had started sooner. I’m very happy that I did not wait longer. 2014 was my best reading year ever. I did “cheat” a little by recording every book of the Bible separately, but I have no regret on that score. I hope that 2015 is as good.
James Tooley on Private Schools for the Poor and the Beautiful Tree EconTalk
James Tooley, Professor of Education at Newcastle University, talks to EconTalk host Russ Roberts about low-cost for-profit private schools in the slums and rural areas of poor countries. Tooley shows how surprisingly widespread private schools are for the poor and how effective they are relative to public schools where teacher attendance and performance can be very disappointing. Obama said at a White House news conference: “We cannot have a society in which some dictator some place can start imposing censorship here in the United States,” Obama said. “That’s not who we are. That’s not what America is about.” (emphasis added)
You see what’s important here, right? We cannot allow some dictator some place to impose censorship on us, because we are much better at doing that domestically.
If you think that the pervasive surveillance that has continued to grow in the world (under every political party) is not a form of censorship, you are simply delusional.
Imagine my delight, then, as a born again Christian when I came to realize that it WAS true after all: God did become flesh, and He did dwell among us. And He did it out of his great and wondrous love for us, as part of his plan of redemption. Amazing!
