Print Your Gun Parts at Home, from Reason.com by J.D. Tuccille

In February, the techie gun-rights group Defense Distributed unveiled a 3D-printed lower receiver for an AR-15 rifle that withstood hundreds of rounds of fire. A YouTube video of the component in action was accompanied by the terse statement, “Does not fail from firing stresses. 600+ rounds.”

The Public/Private Surveillance Partnership, from Schneier on Security by Bruce Schneier

Our government collects a lot of information about us. Tax records, legal records, license records, records of government services received– it’s all in databases that are increasingly linked and correlated. Arming Syrians, Disarming Americans?

CNN Breaking News 4:55 PM, 19 March, 2013

There is a “high probability” that Syria used chemical weapons against opposition forces, though verification is needed, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday.

The claims come amid pressure in the West to arm the rebels, long overmatched by the Syrian military and its allies.

The embattled government of President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday accused rebels of a deadly chemical weapon missile attack on the town of Khan al-Asal in Aleppo province. The opposition has accused al-Assad’s forces of using such weapons.

The civil war — which began two years ago after a government crackdown on Syrian protesters — has left around 70,000 people dead, the United Nations says, and uprooted more than 1 million people.

So, let me get this straight: The same people who want to disarm Americans so that the American government can run roughshod over civilians wants to arm Syrian “rebels” (Syrian civilians) so that they can defend themselves against a government that wants to run roughshod over them.

Really?

The Right to Self Defense Isn’t Negotiable – Reason.com

“In all the noise caused by the Obama administration’s direct assault on the right of every person to keep and bear arms, the essence of the issue has been drowned out. The president and his big-government colleagues want you to believe that only the government can keep you free and safe, so to them, the essence of this debate is about obedience to law.”

The author of this piece makes some very important points that have been overlooked in much of the discussion.
